Stairs

Similar to Reptiles one, our Catawba Valley Camera Club is having a competition on “Stairs.” Since I can’t submit images for this competition, I have searched in my library of photos and will be posting related images.

Here is an image of stairs of a lighthouse in Outer Banks, North Carolina taking the photo of symmetrical stairs from the top looking down. The ordered layout the bricks adds to the image.

Rain Storms

While thunderstorms with heavy rain (as shown in this image) make people concerned about floods, road destruction, and property damage, the post storm period offers several interesting rain drop photo opportunities. We will present some of those images in the next few days.

Ribblehead Viaduct

The Ribblehead Viaduct carries the Settle–Carlisle Railway across Batty Moss in the valley of the River Ribble at Ribblehead, in the Yorkshire Dales, England. It is one of the most famous feats of Victorian engineering along the stunning Settle to Carlisle railway line and a well-known photo stop for many visitors.

Taking a Shot of York Minster

Figures released in March 2023 by the Association of Leading Visitor Attractions (ALVA) reveal that York Minster welcomed 620,591 visitors for worship and tourism last year. That was up by 133 per cent on the figure of 266,183 in 2021 and not far short of the cathedral’s record visitor number of 706,484 in 2019. Taking photographs of the minster is prevalent.

Exploring the Falls

Hickory Nut Falls trail’s main destination is to the base of the waterfalls. It is relatively safe to rock-hop and explore the stream right at the base of the falls since it is flat there, but it is generally frowned upon. Adventurers cross the base and even use it as a photo shoot!

Images in Fog – Bass Lake

Fog creates a mystic environment for photographers. While the clarity is somewhat blurred, it adds a bit of mystery to the images. Normally a clear lake on a sunny day, Bass Lake in North Carolina is shrouded in fog creating an eerie image.

Reflections – in Landscape

The wonderful thing about using reflections when taking photos is that they can completely alter the image from something fairly straightforward to something richer or abstract or otherwise more artistic. Here is a reflection of the landscape at sunset in a small body of water.

Clouds – Striking Formations

Cloudscape photography is photography of clouds or sky. The sky is the single most abstract and dynamic canvas that a photographer has at his disposal. It is an endless source of inspiration that can change a boring photo into one of tremendous interest. Clouds can really either dominate an image or they can enhance the background.

Will be posting this week images of clouds as the dominant feature. Here is one with striking cloud formations in the blue sky.

Design Photography – Circles of Art

What makes a striking photo? Often, it’s merely ordinary things composed in an ordinary manner. That’s because they always tend to have a single theme or idea, and because clutter is kept to a minimum. However, in this image, we are looking at the elements of design (line, shape, form, texture, pattern, and color) that turns a simple subject into an interesting photo.

Design Photography – Symmetrical Designs Overhead

Successful photos rely on order, and the main elements that bring and emphasize order in a composition are: line, shape, form, texture, pattern, and color. Every photograph, intentionally or not, contains one or more of these element, which are known as the elements of design.

Here is an image of pure symmetry (or order) …….
