Hart Square Village

Our Catawba Valley Camera Club went on a private excursion to Hart Square Village last month, and we will post images captured there in the coming weeks.

Hart Square (located in Vale, North Carolina) is the nation’s most extensive collection of historic log cabins. Dr. Bob Hart, with the help of friends and volunteers, envisioned rescuing these pioneer structures and moving them to Hart Square to be preserved and enjoyed by the public. The square has 103 structures and is laid out well with an informative map and well-marked signs.

Sunflowers on a Field

Sunflower fields at Dix Park in Raleigh are pretty. A white fence in the background adds to this image.

Apart from pollinators, sunflowers attract beneficial insects like ladybugs and lacewings, which help control pest populations in gardens and agricultural fields. The tall stalks and dense foliage of sunflowers offer shelter to birds.

Bunch of Sunflowers

Apart from a single sunflower, a bunch of these makes the image more striking. A group of flowers is called a “bouquet”. However, botanically speaking, it is called an “inflorescence”. An inflorescence is a collection or aggregation of flowers on an individual plant. Inflorescences often function to enhance reproduction.

Bonsai Trees

The word “Bon-sai” (often misspelled as bonzai or banzai) is a Japanese term which, literally translated, means “planted in a container”. It has been around for well over a thousand years. The ultimate goal of growing a Bonsai is to create a miniaturized but realistic representation of nature in the form of a tree. Bonsai are not genetically dwarfed plants, in fact, any tree species can be used to grow one.

The Triangle Bonsai Society displayed an amazing array of bonsai carefully pruned plants in the Doris Duke Center at Sarah P. Duke Gardens, Durham, North Carolina. The 2-day exhibit included more than 40 bonsai created in multiple styles from a wide range of plant species, including maple, azalea, pine, elm, juniper, bald cypress, crabapple, ficus and more. We will post some images from our visit there on July 6, 2024.

Red London Buses

Double-decker buses were popularized in Great Britain at the start of the 20th century and today the best-known example is the red London bus, namely the AEC Routemaster. By the mid-1920s there were about 20 different companies with buses driving all over the city. The largest of these businesses, The London General Omnibus Company (LGOC), sought to differentiate from their competition and painted their buses bright red.

While the building in this photo has a traditional design, the red bus strikingly adds color to the image.
