Kress Building Ornate Architecture

S. H. Kress & Co. was an iconic American “five-and-dime” retail chain founded by Samuel Henry Kress in 1896. Renowned for their ornate Art Deco architecture, over 200 Kress stores transformed Main Street America. This one is in Durham.

We end the series of images of architecture, from Gothic, Modern, and Art Deco in Durham, North Carolina.

Durham Hotel Modern Architecture

The Durham Hotel is anything but typical. Its modern geometric siding and angled tower have kept the mid century style alive in Durham. Built in 1968, this gem of mid-century modern architecture, with its mid-century facade and its distinct gold accents, remains.

From Inside Brodhead Center at Duke University

The Duke University Brodhead Center for Campus Life, formerly the historic West Campus Union, is the major cornerstone of the Duke Campus. Fully modernized, with glass, the high-ceilinged, day-lit hall includes a variety of dining venues where faculty, students, staff, and alumni can meet for planned or impromptu interactions.

The architects, for the Richard H. Brodhead Center, preserved the integrity of the 1920s design, restoring the historic structure while also building a modern glass-centric atrium at Duke University. The facility features diverse dining venues and student life spaces of many scales. The design of the “interior street,” which blends new and old and was instrumental in defining the ambitions of the student life spaces, was developed in collaboration with Duke’s stakeholders and the student body.

Interesting to see a modern building behind the event park.

Mexico City Metropolitan Cathedral Towers

The two bell towers of the Mexico City Metropolitan Cathedral reach 215 feet and contain 25 bells. The wires across the towers add a modern sense to old architecture.

Visit to Mexico City

We visited Mexico City, Mexico, in June. We will be posting a series of photos from that city.

Mexico City is the densely populated, high-altitude capital of Mexico. Home to over 22 million people, it is a ginormous metropolis that blends ancient history with modern innovation, making it one of the most unique cities in the world.

We stayed at the modern version of Mexico City at the JW Marriott in Polanco, and a renovated historic building for the Hampton Inn in the historic center, to photograph different images of this city.

San Jose – Modern and Traditional

The culture and history is mirrored in the architecture of the republic of Costa Rica. The pre-Columbian influence, and a colourful blend of Mesoamerican, Central American and Spanish architecture is seen. These historical buildings are perfectly complimented with the new age contemporary architecture in Costa Rica.

Below is a modern Hilton hotel very close to a traditionally designed building in San Jose. Right in the front of the hotel is Plaza Juan Mora Fernandez. Juan Mora Fernández was Costa Rica’s first elected head of state in 1825. He is remembered for instituting land reform, and he followed a progressive course.

Lighthouse with Three Sides

The Sullivan’s Island Lighthouse, also commonly known as “Charleston Light” holds a unique title in Carolina Lighthouse lore as one of the most modern lighthouses in the country. The unique triangular and slim structure, which is broken up into two black and white color blocks, is hard to miss, and is a distinctive local landmark that hovers over the beach scene.
