Blue and Gold Macaw

This is a large parrot, at Sylvan Heights Bird Park, with long tail feathers, mainly blue and yellow. The forehead is green, the upper part of the body brilliant blue, and the sides of the neck and body golden yellow. These macaws also have black around the chin and cheeks, and the naked skin of the cheeks is pinkish-white with lines of very small, isolated black feathers. Macaws are often monogamous, remaining bonded for life. They are usually seen flying in large flocks, and the bonded pairs fly close together, their wings nearly touching.

Peafowl

Male peacocks, also known as peafowl, are easily recognizable by their vibrant blue or green plumage and long, ornate tail feathers, also known as trains. This long tail is a key feature for courtship displays to attract peahens (female peacocks). The term “peacock” refers to the male bird, while the female is a peahen, and the whole group is called peafowl.

Parakeets

A parakeet is any one of many small- to medium-sized parrot species, in multiple genera, that generally have long tail feathers. The two basic parakeet color types are green and blue.

Parakeets at Sylvan Heights Bird Park are in a small protected enclosure where visitors can feed them, and the birds sit on the visitors’ hands or heads.

“Albino” Horse

We saw a distinctive horse at the barn at Churchill Downs. “Albino” horses are a color type of horse born white and have pink skin, but they are not true biological albinos. They have slim heads, muscular necks, compact bodies, sloping shoulders, muscular croup, and long tails. Their eyes are blue, dark, or light brown rather than pink. Their hooves are often weak, but they have flat, smooth gait.

Costa Rica Food Exports

The top three food exports of Costa Rica are pineapples, bananas and coffee.

It was interesting to see blue covers on the bananas. The use of a banana fruit blue ripening bag can improve the quality of the fruit as well as increase the yield, and in many case reduce the ripening time. The ripening fruit gives off a gas that in turn speeds up the ripening of remaining fruit. Covers also help to protect the fruit against insects and other animals.
