Memorial Chapel inside Duke Chapel

The Memorial Chapel is located just off the main area of the Duke Chapel, behind iron gates. On the altar are three limewood figures: St. Paul, Jesus, and St. Peter. Entombed in the Memorial Chapel are the benefactors for whom the University is named, Washington Duke and his two sons, Benjamin N. Duke and James B. Duke.

Duke Statue at the Chapel

James Buchanan Duke is depicted on the statue as larger than life, standing atop an octagonal plinth or pedestal of polished dark granite in front of Duke Chapel. He is holding a walking stick in his right hand and the ever-present cigar in his left hand.

James Buchanan Duke (1856–1925) was an American industrialist and philanthropist known for revolutionizing the tobacco industry, building a massive hydroelectric power empire, and founding Duke University.

Windows with Style

The 77 Duke Chapel windows were designed and constructed over a three-year period by 15 artists and craftsmen. They are constructed from over one million pieces of glass, imported from England, France, and Belgium and varying in thickness between 1/8 and 3/16 inch. The largest window measures 17.5 by 38 feet, and the smallest measures just 14 by 20 inches.
