Hilton Head Island’s beaches are more than a scenic escape—they’re critical to the island’s identity, economy, and ecology. In order to preserve the beach, an infusion of sand is needed along some of the coast to ensure the sandy shoreline is wide enough for everyone
The beach is a vital habitat for both migratory birds and nesting sea turtles
The 2025–2026 Hilton Head beach renourishment project was underway in the Coligny Beach area when we visited. The project involves adding 2.1 million cubic yards of sand to counteract erosion, pumping sand 24/7 from offshore to reshape the beach.
Here are images of the equipment and even birds looking for food.

There are designs that are man-made and these show the creativity of man. The natural design elements show the Creator! Nature has incredible patterns. Everywhere we turn in the natural world, these intricate patterns emerge, painting a complex tapestry that spans from the expansive spirals of distant galaxies to the delicate symmetry found in a leaf’s structure. These inherent patterns in nature are more than just visual marvels for us; they carry an essential bond to our human psyche. Whether we’re taking a tranquil walk through a dense forest, observing the mesmerizing ripples in a pond, or simply admiring the elegant tessellations in honeycomb structures, people’s emotional and physiological responses are deeply intertwined with these natural designs.
We present images this week of simple designs made by nature. Here is an image of ripples caused by wind in the in the sand midst small stones creating an interesting design pattern.

On a secluded stretch of beach (Sunset Beach, North Carolina) far from the nearest public access point and nestled between sand dunes is an unlikely sight – a mailbox…with a bench next to it. The bench is where you sit to pen your innermost thoughts; the mailbox is where you place the journal when you are done. More than just a receptacle for pieces of paper, the Kindred Spirit Mailbox on Bird Island holds the wishes, thoughts, prayers and dreams of those who walk the 30 minutes to share and bare their soul and draw comfort from the act of doing so while enjoying the soothing sounds and sights of undeveloped beach, ocean and horizon.
