Karl Bowers Bridge is the main gateway to Hilton Head Island, spanning the iconic span that welcomes you to the coast. Once on the island, this highway connects visitors to key areas, including Shelter Cove, Palmetto Dunes, Sea Pines, and Coligny Beach.

Star and Stripes Boat

Stars & Stripes 87 (US 55) was the 12 Meter challenge boat sailed by Dennis Conner in his bid to reclaim the America’s Cup from the Royal Perth Yacht Club of Australia in 1987.

Only on Hilton Head and only in Harbour Town can you sail aboard the real America’s Cup.

Harbour Town Lighthouse

While not historic, the Harbour Town Lighthouse is nevertheless an iconic image of Hilton Head. This 90-foot tower was built in 1970 – the first privately financed lighthouse constructed since the early 1800s.

The design of the Fresnel lens dates back to the time of Napoleon, when the hazards of navigation demanded a way to cast the beacon from a lighthouse farther and stronger.

Birds at Coligny Beach Renourishment Project

Hilton Head Island’s beaches are more than a scenic escape—they’re critical to the island’s identity, economy, and ecology. In order to preserve the beach, an infusion of sand is needed along some of the coast to ensure the sandy shoreline is wide enough for everyone

The beach is a vital habitat for both migratory birds and nesting sea turtles

Visiting Hilton Head

Hilton Head Island is in South Carolina. It’s known for Atlantic Ocean beaches. We will post some images captured on the beaches during our visit there in February 2026.

During the early-sunset walk on Barony Beach, we saw these boats stranded on the beach, with the bright sun behind them.
