A 70 ft overlook of the Kentucky River provides a view of the scenic Kentucky River Palisades. The Kentucky River Palisades are a series of steep, scenic gorges and limestone outcroppings that stretch for approximately 100 mi along the Kentucky River in central Kentucky.

Ribblehead Viaduct Engineering
Ribblehead Viaduct is 440 yards long, and 104 feet above the valley floor at its highest point. It was designed to carry a pair of tracks aligned over the sleeper walls. The viaduct has 24 arches of 45 feet span, the foundations of which are 25 feet deep. The viaduct is faced with limestone masonry set in hydraulic lime mortar and the near-semicircular arches are red brick, constructed in five separate rings, with stone voussoirs. In total, 1.5 million bricks were used; some of the limestone blocks weigh eight tons.
Natural Sculpture in the Cavern
Now labelled as one of the seven wonders of the Peak District, Poole’s Cavern is a 2-million-year-old natural limestone cavern near Buxton in the Peak District. In addition to stalactite and stalagmite formations, it was interesting to see a natural stone sculpture formed at the base of a river.

The cathedral sized main chamber at Poole’s Cavern, England is carved from limestone by an ancient river. Walking through the cavern reveals nature’s artwork formed by stalactites of various sizes and shapes.

Poole’s Cavern or Poole’s Hole is a two-million-year-old natural limestone cave on the edge of Buxton in the Peak District, in the county of Derbyshire, England. Located just outside the spa town of Buxton, these caves were named after an infamous outlaw John Poole, who, rumor has it, used them as a hideout during the early years of the 15th century.
Stone Arch Bridge at Night – Minneapolis
Stone Arch Bridge was built between 1881 and 1883 to carry the Minneapolis Union Railroad over the Mississippi River just below St. Anthony Falls in Minneapolis. Originally the bridge had 23 limestone arches with spans ranging from 40 to 98 feet.
A Classic Church
The architecture of Corinth Reformed Church, Hickory, North Carolina is reminiscent of a fine European cathedral. The exterior of the building is of gray Georgia granite with Indiana limestone trim. The spire is of extruded and structural aluminum rising 164 ft. 6 in. from the terrace floor at the entrance. The belfry below the spire is built up of carved and molded limestone tracery, giving a lacy and ethereal feeling to the church tower. The main entrance is of limestone having carvings similar to those found on French Gothic churches.
Durdle Door
Durdle Door is a natural limestone arch on the Jurassic Coast near Lulworth in Dorset. Eroded by time and nature, Durdle Door is one of Dorset’s most photographed and iconic landmarks. The name Durdle is derived from an old English word ‘thirl’, which means to pierce, bore or drill.
