Munnar, Kerala, is one of the centers of Indian tea production.
Tea plant picking involves meticulous pruning of the top layer of young leaves. The result is that the tea bushes end up leveling at the same height, creating fluffy sheets of green. Workers have to negotiate the hills and carry a load. The daily salary for a tea picker is the equivalent of $3 a day, provided they pick 29 kg (64 lbs) of fresh, young tea leaves.

Munnar, Kerala is a beautiful hill station, and was the summer resort of the British. Tourists come here to see the vast tea plantations of the area. The town itself is typically Indian with the usual shops, guest houses and is really beautiful and traditional.
The region in and around Munnar varies in height from 1,500 m (4,921 ft) to 2,695 m (8,842 ft) above mean sea level. It is pronounced “Moon-aar” short for “moonu aar” meaning 3 rivers. Three rivers – Mattupetti, Nallathanni and Periavaru which flow through this town, but join some distance away from Munnar.
Munnar is famous for its tea plantations, many of them started by the British.

A Valley in Munnar
The early history of Munnar, Kerala is not perfectly known today. The early inhabitants of the region are members of the Muthuvan tribal community. However, it remained a wild and unexplored landscape till the later half of 19th century when ambitious planters from as far as Europe started plantations here.
If plantation industry ‘discovered’ Munnar in the 19th century, it was re-discovered by the tourism industry in the later half of the 20th century. The hill station, situated about 1600 m above the sea level, began to be flocked by travelers from around the world. The town, which still retains its colonial charm, has a large number of hotels to greet travelers. Virgin forests, savannahs, rolling hills, scenic valleys, numerous streams, waterfalls, sprawling tea plantations and winding walkways are attracting thousands every year.
