Stalactite Joins a Stalagmite
Stalagnate results when stalactites and stalagmites meet or when stalactites reach the floor of the cave. If the two should grow together, the speleothem is called a “column.” Here is a specimen at Poole’s Cavern, Derbyshire in England.

Ranging in height from several inches to several feet, the tops of the pillars form a level line to highlight the dips and rises of the rolling hillside at North Carolina Museum of Art, Raleigh.
